Brief background
The Kenya Livestock Marketing Council was established in 2000 as a Private
Sector organisation dedicated to the protection and development of the
interest of the livestock producing communities and contributing to the
economic development of Kenya.
Vision
To be a leading, dynamic and sustainable marketing organisation, effectively
promoting livelihoods of livestock producers and traders.
Mission
To lobby and source market for quality disease free livestock and livestock
products, disseminate accurate and timely market information to traders
and producers with aim of improving the living standards of livestock producing
communities in Kenya.
Objectives
• To advocate for the interest and rights of the members on livestock
matters in collaboration with other stakeholders.
• To promote livestock and livestock products marketing nationally
and internationally in particular in pastoral areas, in order to enhance
and improve the economic well being of pastoralists.
• To develop local and regional marketing research centres and marketing
institutions.
• To enhance marketing information, dissemination and communication
to producers and traders.
• Lobby for policy change to favour appropriate livestock development.
• Build capacities of user groups to sustainably manage livestock
related infrastructure and undertake community based disease control measures.
Key
Strategies
The following are the strategies of KLMC in achieving its set objectives:

• Lobbying and advocacy for better policies for the pastoralists.
• Capacity building of the pastoralists
• Quality assurance of livestock and its products.
• Development of a marketing strategy.
• Collaborating with other stakeholders (government institutions,
NGOs, Donor communities and civil societies) to improve pastoralists’
livelihood.
Membership
and Organisation
KLMC derives its strength and membership from grass-root whereby producers,
traders, user associations and other interested stakeholders are encouraged
to register in the districts. Currently, KLMC has1552 registered members.
However, this number is increasing because of the ongoing recruitment in
Kajiado district. Our operation now covers 18 arid and semi arid areas:
• Northern Region: Isiolo, Marsabit, Moyale and Samburu distirict.
• North Eastern Axis: Garissa, Mandera, Ijara, Wajir, TanaRiver
• North West Axis: Baringo, Turkana,
• Southern Axis: Kajiado, Narok.
• Nairobi terminal market: Kariobangi, Njiru and Dagoretti.
